Vitamin Supplements Offer New Potential for TB Control in Wild Animal Hosts

New research has revealed a potential new way to combat the spread of tuberculosis (TB) – by feeding vitamin D supplements.

Vitamin D and other nutritional factors are known to influence the severity of TB in humans, but its relationship with cattle and other mammals has not been studied until now.

The research, published in the journal Research in Veterinary Science, revealed that supplementation reduces the incidence and severity of tuberculosis (TB) in wild boar and red deer, which are key hosts of the disease in southern Europe. The scientists said that the role of vitamin D supplementation could be explored in other animals, such as badgers.

Dr F. Javier Salguero of the University of Surrey said: “We know that eradicating TB – a massive problem in animals worldwide – is a complicated process. However, nutritional factors could play a significant role as a preventative measure.” – Click here to read more.
