Global Dairy Prices Continue to Rise

Price indices at the Global Dairy Trade auction on Tuesday rose by 7.7 per cent, indicating continuing recovery in dairy prices. Butter and skimmed milk powder performed particularly well, with 15 per cent and 10 per cent rises respectively, whilst whole milk powder prices rose by 3.7 per cent.

Together with continued strong increases in EU average commodity prices, the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) said that this meant farmers would be expecting significant milk price increases, and it will be lobbying companies accordingly.

IFA National Dairy Committee Chairman Sean O’Leary said: “Even allowing for a level of forward selling at lower prices, these continued return improvements will make a big difference to co-ops in their ability to pay higher milk prices.” – Click here to read more.

Meanwhile, UK levy board AHDB Dairy has reported that these market improvements seem to be translating through to farmgate returns, at least in New Zealand and the EU.

New Zealand’s two largest dairy co-operatives, Fonterra and Westland, have both raised their forecast farmgate prices for the 2016/17 season (ending May 2017).

In Europe, Friesland Campina has raised its guaranteed farmgate milk price by 5 per cent for September, whilst French company Lactalis is also reported to have agreed to a price rise, following a series of farmer protests and discussions – read more.

Dairying - Using Science to Meet Consumers' Needs

Dairying - Using Science to Meet Consumers' Needs

Dairying once again finds itself at a crossroads. Increasingly producers and the scientists who work with them need to harness their knowledge and expertise to meet the demands that consumers have for milk and milk products. This volume discusses how the industry can meet the needs of today's consumer. Scientists, producers, processors and marketeers together with those interested in the wider issues of biotechnology and the environment, present their views on five key areas of debate: cows for lifetime production; management for lifetime production; feeds and feeding; opportunities and impact; marketing - the myth against milk. The book concludes with a chapter looking at the future of dairying.
