Difficult Times Ahead for US Beef Finishers?

Last Friday saw the release of USDA's monthly, Cattle on Feed report. The marketings of cattle by feedlots and placements of new cattle into yards were well below expectations.

September placements were estimated at only 2.004 million head, 19.6 per cent lower than the same month in 2011 and the lowest ever on record for September.

These numbers follow substantial declines seen in July and August, and the third consecutive month in which placements have been 10 per cent or more lower than the previous 12 months.

The total number of cattle on feed in September was nearly three per cent lower than a year ago.

This 469,000 head drop is the second largest year-on-year reduction since January 2006 and means that cattle feeders have placed 942,000 fewer cattle over the past six months than they did just one year ago.

The long-term downward trend in cattle numbers is set to continue with the 2012 calf crop estimated to be between 800,000 to 850,000 head (2.3 per cent) smaller than 2011's.

Lower calf numbers, along with high feed prices and excess capacity in feedlots have contributed to ongoing negative returns for feedlots.

As a result, experts predict cattle supplies to be tighter than previously expected, with record high cattle prices in store for 2013.

Biosecurity on US Feedlots
Biosecurity is a collection of management practices designed to minimise the risk of disease introduction and spread on an operation. Such practices may include: isolation of new arrivals, rodent control, equipment cleaning, and minimising visitor entry into pens. Because feedlots frequently obtain animals from more than one source, biosecurity practices are important in preventing disease introduction and spread.

Predicting Water Intake by Yearling Feedlot Steers
Bodyweight and numerous weather factors affect water consumption by yearling feedlot steers but the effect of feed intake is minimal, according to new research from Colorado State University.

What Do RIN Values Tell Us about Biofuel Mandates?
The impact of the US drought on the price of corn and other feed grains and oilseeds has made the arcane subject of Renewable Identification Number (RINs) and the role of US biofuel policy of great interest this year. For example, there have been a number of recent calls to the EPA for waivers of the RFS mandates to relieve pressure on food prices for consumers and feed prices for livestock producers.
