Positive Outlook for UK Beef Industry

Despite high feed prices and low confidence in farm returns, there seems to be positivity surrounding the UK beef industry at Livestock 2012.

Debbie Butcher, an analyst from Eblex highlighted the historic beef and cattle prices that the industry is seeing.

"Prime cattle are smashing 350 pence per kg in England, with tight supplies driving the price up." Recognising that input costs have also rocketed, these increased finished beef prices are not necessarily bringing home profits, she said.

However, supplies will continue to remain tight she said, with cattle slaughtering already down by eight per cent for the first half of 2012 compared to last the same period last year.

Ms Butcher also said that the fact some producers were willing to pay high prices for store cattle suggested increasing confidence in the industry.

The National Farmers' Union set out its vision for the UK beef sector, launching Bullish Prospects,a report which identifies priority areas for action for each part of the chain in order for beef farming to become sustainable and attractive for the next generation of farmers.

"This is our vision for a profitable, economically sustainable and internationally competitive industry but we hope that others would share this aspiration and we look forward to working towards this with partners throughout the chain in the future," said Charles Sercombe, National Farmers' Union Livestock Board Chairman.

The first few days of dry weather for the summer seems to have had an effect on farmers attendance at the show, which as a result is relatively quiet.

Because the show clashes with harvest, the organisers, the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers, has announced that the show will run at the beginning of July in 2013.

Reducing Weaning Stress
It's approaching quickly, that time of year when you start to think about weaning your calves. Calves are weaned to make sure that cows can recover their body condition after raising a calf all summer, and to allow for specialized feeding of those calves. All producers do it, but not everyone approaches weaning in the same way, writes the Beef Cattle Research Council.

Heat Stress's Reproductive Ramifications
Animal agriculture loses around $2 billion a year due to heat stress. History has taught us that heat stress does not have to last a long period of time to have a profound impact on production, writes Kalyn Bischoff from South Dakota University Extension.

Larger Concentrate Pellets Permit Earlier Weaning
Using a 6 mm early weaning concentrate pellet may permit earlier weaning and thus reduce calf rearing costs, according to Harper Adams University College's Simon Marsh.
