Editorial: US Cattle Supply Less than Expected

Drought, poor returns due to high feed prices and overall lower cattle supplies saw April placements of cattle on feed fall 15 per cent or 264,000 head compared to last year.

The US Cattle on Feed numbers this week suggested a smaller cattle supply than previously expected.

The pattern of low placements is expected to continue into the summer.

James Robb, Director for the Livestock Marketing Information Centre, said structural change was evident in the cattle industry over the last year, with smaller (less than 1000 head) feedlots focusing on the profits to be made from crops, and moving away from dwindling cattle returns.

Feedlots with over 1000 head capacity represent an increasing proportion of US cattle being fed, he said.

USDA said marketings of fed cattle from large feed yards during April totaled 1.815 million head, slightly above 2011.

Other disappearance was 30 per cent higher this year, which Steve Meyer and Len Steiner put down to cattle grown in yard on relatively low energy diets moving to spring grass. Other disappearance usually peaks in April or May each year as pastures become more available.
