Editorial: Argentina Cracks Down On FMD Controls

The Argentine National Health and Food Quality Service (SENASA) has announced it has been running different preventive measures in the country in the face of the foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in the Republic of Paraguay.

FMD vaccination is underway in Salta, Chaco, Formosa, Corrientes, Misiones and Entre Rios.

At the end of the programme more than 14 million animals susceptible to FMD in the region will have been vaccinated.

The task of eradicating bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) in Scotland is ongoing. This week, the Scottish National Farmers Union President, Nigel Miller, has urged producers to focus on the benefits of eradicating BVD, rather than its difficulties.

He says the many gains would include improved fertility and consequently less unplanned culling, better growth rates and feed conversion performance, and reduced medication costs.

Next week, World Dairy Expo kicks off in Madison, US. The show is expecting over 65,000 producers and industry professionals to attend the five day event.
