Editorial: EU Meat Trade Gap to Widen

The EU trade gap in meat is forecast to widen and while the output of poultry meat and pig meat will increase over the decade, that of beef, sheep and goat is set to decline, according to Prospects for Agricultural Markets and Income in the EU 2010-2020 from the European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development.

Milk production is expected to increase again but only modestly. The medium-term outlook for EU agriculture depicts a mixed picture with regard to commodity market developments.

The outlook for EU agricultural markets remains subject to a number of uncertainties regarding future market developments as well as the macroeconomic and policy settings.

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association in the US has backed the final rule published in the Federal Register on 29 December - Nutrition Labelling of Single-Ingredient Products or Chopped Meat and Poultry Products.

NCBA Executive Director of Legislative Affairs Kristina Butts said: “NCBA supports nutrition labelling on beef products and is pleased to see USDA moving forward with this effort."

Meanwhile, in cattle health, concerns are rising as Foot and Mouth Disease is spreading in South Korea and outbreaks have also been reported by authorities in Taiwan and Mozambique.
