Editorial: Export Markets Continue Strong

In Brazil, beef exports to the Middle East have risen substantially over the last year, in total by 94 per cent. From January to November 2010, Brazil exported a total of US$ 4.4 billion beef.

It is expected that beef export revenues for 2011 will range between US$ 5.3 billion to US$ 5.5 billion. The beef exporters association, as well as the federal government has selected four potential target markets for exports, including China, Angola, Cuba and Morocco.

Brazil is maintaining talks with the US, which blocked Brazilian beef imports after high levels of anthelmintic Ivermectin was found in some batches. The country is also in talks with the EU, to come to some understanding over the Hilton Quota.

US beef exports were up nearly 17 per cent in the first 10 months of this year, with a projected 18-19 per cent increase in 2010. Whilst growth in exports is not expected to keep such a dramatic pace in the coming year, beef export volumes are expected to maintain their current levels or increase by as much as three per cent.

Canadian beef exporters are looking at increasing efficiencies, improving food safety and lowering operational costs to potentially triple beef exports to Asia.

Exports of Northern Irish (NI) calves to Continental Europe have gradually increased over the last year. So far this year over 14,500 calves have been exported from NI with the bulk of them going to Italy and Spain.

Until early 2009 there were no exports of bull calves from the UK to continental Europe and many local producers finished these calves for the domestic market as young bulls.
