Editorial: US Beef Exports Look To Korea

A US-Korea free trade arrangement is expected to increase US beef and pork exports to South Korea by $2 billion, creating more than 26,700 American jobs.

Beef exports continue to grow, from 233 metric tons valued at $612,000 in 2006 to 56,000 metric tons valued at $56 million in 2009. Through the first nine months of the 2010, exports to South Korea are up 136 per cent in volume and 181 per cent in value over the same period last year.

When the deal is finally signed and sealed, it will phase out Korea’s 40 per cent tariff on beef imports, which would equate to $325 million in tariff reductions annually once fully implemented.

Earlier this week, the US Meat Export Federation launched the second phase of a US beef marketing campaign in South Korea.

The campaign includes television advertisements, trade magazine ads and mass transit signage, which are designed to counter the 'factory farming' image that many Koreans have of US agriculture.
