Editorial: New Rule Threatens Producers

Livestock producers in the US have rallied against the Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration’s (GIPSA) proposed federal rule on the buying and selling of livestock.

Producers are concerned that the new rule will have a negative effect on farm businesses.

Farming organisations have criticised the rule, saying it is too broad and very vague. They are concerned that it will inject uncertainty into the market, stifle innovation and lead to less, not more competition, in the livestock industry.

Agricultural representatives have questioned the need and utility of the GIPSA rule, saying that is lacks a sound economic analysis.

The global Standard for Sustainable Cattle Production Systems, a tool that will help cattle farmers implement good environmental, social and animal-welfare practices and enable them voluntarily to apply for the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal of approval, was launched earlier this week.

This is the first tropical sustainable cattle standard developed for a voluntary certification system.

It will be available to cattle farms in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Oceania that are interested in improving their environmental, social, labour and operational performance and marketing their products with the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal.
