Editorial: Input Costs Continue To Escalate

Feed prices in the UK and the US have continued to increase this year, in response to concerns over supply shortages and quality.

In the past, high feed prices have resulted in a period of financial loss and discouragement for farmers. Livestock specialists are advising producers to remain cautious.

There are also concerns that a rise in grain prices will be followed by a steep rise in fertiliser prices.

Livestock farmers in the UK are being urged to consider alternative bedding such as oilseed rape straw, sawdust and woodchips, due to escalating straw prices.

Other alternatives such as canary reed grass and miscanthus, are new bedding materials.

New Zealand dairy giant Fonterra has set a new export record, sending 2.1 million metric tonnes of product to international markets for the first time in its nine-year history.

In the UK, Arla Foods has confirmed that it is to invest over £150 million in Arla UK’s new dairy on the outskirts of London.

US Dairy Outlook - August 2010
Reduced cow numbers are being more than offset by increased output per cow, leading to rising milk production. Higher exports and rising domestic use will keep prices relatively firm. The immediate tightness in the butter market could be remedied by next year’s higher milk production, according to the USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) August 2010 Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook.
US Feed Outlook - August 2010
The 2010 corn crop is forecast to be a new record, according to USDA Economic Research Service.
