Editorial: International Trading

Argentina will not fulfil its 2009-10 Hilton High Quality Beef quota.

It is expected it will fall 10,000 tonnes short of their total 28,000 tonne quota.

The shortage was anticipated despite the government redistributing 3,923 tonnes back in March. The shortage has come about due to lack of supply and tight government export controls.

Following on from recent talks regarding a Mercosur trading deal, Irish Farmers' Association President John Bryan has said that any such talks pose a serious threat to the viability of the beef sector in Ireland.

He said that an increase in imports could inflict losses of €350m on the Irish beef sector or worse, completely shut down the industry.

The Australian Beef Association has criticised Meat and Livestock Australia and the Red Meat Advisory Council over conflicting trade data.

It has emerged that data kept by these two parties, regarding imports of American beef prior to BSE, is substantially different to that, which America claims to have exported to Australia prior.

Last week, European MEPs voted in favour for all meat products, even when used as an ingredient in processed food, to indicate country of origin labelling.

During this breakthrough in compulsory labelling, it was also agreed that food labels should feature mandatory nutritional information and guideline daily amounts.
