Editorial: Consumer Confidence And Food Safety

The European Parliament has blocked the authorisation of "meat glue" thrombin as a food additive.

The enzyme, derived from pigs or cattle, can be used to stick scraps of meat together to form single pieces. It was decided that these reconstituted meat products carry an unacceptably high risk of misleading consumers.

The US Food Safety Inspection Service has published a compliance guide to provide beef slaughter establishments with an informational resource on pre-harvest management controls to reduce E.coli O157.

Although still in early days, it is hoped that this will reduce the risk of E.coli infections spreading to the consumer.

Sainsbury's in the UK has announced that it has become the largest retailer of Freedom Foods.

Mintel research released this week revealed that animal welfare is Britain's number one food concern, with almost 40 per cent of British consumers worried about this issue.
