Editorial: UK Concerned Over Risk Of Bluetongue

The Northern Irish Minister of Agriculture, Ulster Farmers' Union and the National Farmers' Union in Scotland are all concerned that cattle farmers are becoming complacent regarding bluetongue.

In seperate statements, all reminded producers of the significant cost implications that bluetongue would bring to the industry, and urged them not to import animals from bluetongue infected zones.

Members of the European Parliament announced this week that any changes to the Common Agricultural Policy will make farmers' lives easier by cutting red tape in payment applications, simplifying rules on the electronic identification of animals and providing better information to farmers, for example with a help-desk phone line in each EU Member State.

There has been more devastating news for Japan as the government confirmed that all animals within a 10km radius of infected premises would be vaccinated and then culled, in a bid to prevent the spread of the disease.

It is predicted that 50,000 cattle will be culled, along with 155,000 pigs.

Japan's prime minister, Yukio Hatoyama, has admitted that mistakes have been made in the government's efforts to contain the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak.

He promised his country that the government would do their upmost to prevent the disease spreading further and said that financial aid would be made available to those affected.
