A survey in the US has proved that the Food Safety and Inspection Services (FSIS) E.coli tracing efforts are effective.

With FSIS signifincantly increased the sampling frequency in high volume federal ground beef facilities and improved testing method detections, there was a 66 per cent reduction in prevalence to 0.3 per cent in 2009.

Despite this, efforts still continue to prevent contamination of E.coli.

An ongoing study in the US suggests that the essential oils in orange peel and pulp could kill E.coli O157:H7 and salmonella.

The study suggests using citris byproducts, created by making juices, as a potential feed ingredient for cattle.

Bioniche Life Sciences Inc. has announced that a survey conducted among a random sample of 771 Canadian beef and dairy farmers in all regions of Canada showed that the majority are willing to implement changes on the farm to prevent contamination by E. coli O157:H7.

The company has developed and licensed (in Canada) the world's first vaccine to reduce the shedding by cattle of E.coli O157:H7. It is waiting for a conditional licence to be issued by the USDA.
