Welcome to this week's newsletter Editorial: Increasing Food Safety

A survey in the US has proved that the Food Safety and Inspection Services (FSIS) E.coli tracing efforts are effective.

With FSIS signifincantly increased the sampling frequency in high volume federal ground beef facilities and improved testing method detections, there was a 66 per cent reduction in prevalence to 0.3 per cent in 2009.

Despite this, efforts still continue to prevent contamination of E.coli.

An ongoing study in the US suggests that the essential oils in orange peel and pulp could kill E.coli O157:H7 and salmonella.

The study suggests using citris byproducts, created by making juices, as a potential feed ingredient for cattle.

Bioniche Life Sciences Inc. has announced that a survey conducted among a random sample of 771 Canadian beef and dairy farmers in all regions of Canada showed that the majority are willing to implement changes on the farm to prevent contamination by E. coli O157:H7.

The company has developed and licensed (in Canada) the world's first vaccine to reduce the shedding by cattle of E.coli O157:H7. It is waiting for a conditional licence to be issued by the USDA.

US Feed Outlook - March 2010
Global coarse grain production is up less than the increase in corn because of a reduction in barley production and small declines for mixed grain and rye in the EU, according to this month's Feed Outlook Report from USDA Economic Research Service (ERS).
World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates - March 2010
Carcase weights appear lower likely due to winter weather causing stress to cattle, according to the USDA World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates. Tighter meat supplies are expected to push beef prices up. Milk production is likely to increase fractionally, as the number of cows slaughtered and herd reduction falls.
