The high A$ and increasing competition is putting pressure on the Australian meat industry, however there are opportunities available, delegates at the ABARE Outlook conference heard.

Paul Morris, Deputy Executive Director of ABARE said that growth of live exports would help to support higher saleyard prices.

Whilst Aaron Iori, Regional Manager of South East Asia and Greater China at Meat and Livestock Australia said that population growth in Asia would provide an increasing consumer base for Australian products.

He said: “Australia is well placed to export beef to emerging Asia due to its proximity to those markets and growing Asian consumer awareness of the quality of our product.”

Meanwhile in the US, the American Meat Institute and 50 other organisations are urging Congress to support President Obama's goal to double US exports within five years.

The organisations are pushing Congress to ensure a prompt passage of the pending free trade agreements with Columbia, Panama and South Korea.
