Editorial: Market Intervention Needed In EU Dairy Industry

Stable prices and fair incomes for dairy farmers are crucial to ensuring the supply of high quality dairy products and preserving a vibrant rural environment in Europe, the European Economic and Social Committee said last week.

The Committee were in favour of retaining market intervention measures in order to balance supply and demand, stressing the need for the EU to maintain milk supply security and self-sufficiency.

Elsewhere in the EU animal welfare information will become increasingly available to consumers, as the Agriculture and Fisheries Council agreed on new animal welfare labelling. Decisions on how to implement this are still under review.

In the UK, Hilary Benn the Secretary of the State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs was greeted with protests at the National Farmers' Union conference earlier this week.

Food production, climate change and the Common Agricultural Policy were all discussed at the conference.

Holstein, Ever-Green-View My 1326-ET from Wisconsin, US has become the new national milk production record holder. Calving at four years and five months of age she has produced a 365-day record of 72,170 pounds of milk, with 2,787 pounds of fat and 2,142 pounds of protein.
