Editorial: US Clamp Down On Disease Control

The US Department of Agriculture announced earlier in the week that it is developing a new, flexible framework for animal disease traceability in the US.

The department has toured various states to listen to comments and discussions with regard to the National Animal Identification System.

The first step will be to convene a forum with animal health leaders and greater prevention against the entry and spread of disease. So far proposals include updating analyses on how animal diseases travel into the country, improving response capabilities and focusing on greater collaboration with States and the industry on potential overall disease risk.

This news comes as efforts continue in the UK to keep bluetongue at bay. Livestock producers are being reminded to vaccinate animals and be vigilant when importing from bluetongue infected countries.

Plans have been submitted to build the largest dairy herd in the UK. Nocton Dairies Ltd plans to milk over 8000 cows on two rotary parlours in Lincolnshire, East England.

The new EU Commissioner for Agriculture, Dacian Ciolos is been urged to enter into talks with European milk producers as soon as possible.

Mr Ciolos is also under pressure from EU farm leaders with regard to the future of the CAP and the need to maintain direct aid payments.
