Editorial: Animal Health And Welfare

A public hearing on animal welfare held in the European parliament was welcomed by farming organisation, Copa-Cogeca.

The organisation emphasised the need to ensure that EU legislation is based on good scientific evidence and the EU's high welfare standards also apply to imports.

Studies in Scotland have shown that accurate country of origin labelling is of growing importance to consumers.

The animal industry in the US has reaffirmed its call for a strong, national animal disease traceability programme to help maintain and improve the health of US livestock.

The World Organisation for Animal Health has published technical cards on 33 important global diseases of livestock.

The updated compilation of 33 technical disease cards, includes 32 OIE-listed priority diseases such as foot and mouth disease, highly pathogenic avian influenza, rift valley fever and bluetongue.

Plans have been submitted to build the largest dairy herd in the UK. Nocton Dairies Ltd plans to milk over 8000 cows on two rotary parlours in Lincolnshire, East England.
