Editorial - High-Level Requests to Help the Ailing Dairy Sectors in EU and US In the first quarter of 2009, milk deliveries in the EU were down on the previous year's levels but there has been a recovery in output since the start of the new quota year. EU output for the first two months increasing by one per cent. It appears that some producers are boosting output levels in an attempt to offset lower milk prices as feedstuffs drop in price. Across Europe production trends vary. Germany, the leading producer, increased production by eight per cent for the first three months of 2009/10 marketing season, while milk output from Italy, the Netherlands and Poland has risen by four per cent. The increases have been partially offset by declines in milk output in Ireland, France and the UK. Meanwhile, Members of the European Parliament are calling for help for the dairy industry. They told Agriculture Commissioner, Mariann Fischer Boel, that helping dairy farmers now as well as restructuring the sector in the long run are required to end the current milk market crisis. Problems are not confined to the EU. In the US, the American Farm Bureau Federation has asked President Obama to initiate and continue several national measures to provide relief to the struggling dairy sector. Jackie Linden
