Editorial: Big Initiatives Seek Health in Dairy

A major offensive aimed at bringing Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) under global control has been launched by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

According to FAO Chief Veterinary Officer Joseph Domenech, "The FMD situation worldwide merits the attention of the international community and donors and it needs to be controlled at source and step by step."

The European Commission also began a new disease initiative this week, promising to provide additional financial support to the Bluetongue vaccination programmes of various Member States. The additional amount to be made available to Member States for vaccination is approximately 59 million Euros.

The commission also published a report cataloguing the measures available to help alleviate the difficult dairy market situation.

"We have to do all we can to help our milk producers, who are having to deal with a dramatic fall in prices," said Mariann Fischer Boel, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development. However, not everyone was impressed. Agriculture Committee MEPs said that the measures taken or envisaged by the European Commission to resolve the current crisis are inadequate and are likely to bring about a rapid industry crash.
