Editorial - A New Wave of Fronts Against Animal Diseases

This week countries from all over the world stepped up the battle against animal disease. International experts drew up a Food and Agriculture Organisation 'road map' to control Foot and Mouth Disease in Western Eurasia. The plan is to prevent it from spreading west to Europe and North Africa, following a serious epidemic in several Middle Eastern countries.

Meanwhile the European Union introduced new measures to reduce the risk of animal disease imports, Defra announced that its remaining Bluetongue vaccine stocks will be discounted by 50 per cent, the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) found a way to facilitate the diagnosis of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) and Angola announced that it would vaccinate 70,000 cattle.

The initiatives come just before most of the world steps into the summer months, a time when new diseases emerge from the tropics and begin to travel to the warming Northern climates of Europe and the US. The months ahead are sure to see new outbreaks, but with initiatives like these in place, we may be well prepared against them.
