Editorial: Human Pandemic Causes Meat Trade Disputes
The inaptly named 'swine flu' outbreak has overshadowed much of the global media coverage since the World Health Organisation accorded it 'pandemic status'. This week, it even fell onto TheCattleSite news desk with reports that Russia had extended its ban on meat imports and halted shipments of beef from five US states.
The US government officials are concerned that the flu will prompt countries to ban meat unnecessarily. Restrictions "resulting from the recent outbreak do not appear to be based on scientific evidence and may result in serious trade disruptions without cause", Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in an e-mailed statement.
Russia's meat ban may have little to do with food safety. Last Thursday we reported that, by comparison with the previous year, per-capita meat consumption was up seven per cent in Russia during 2008. Total meat production was also up - more than 11 per cent higher. Now that Russia are gaining the ability to expand their domestic market, perhaps they are seeking the international means also.
