EDITORIAL: Chain Reaction Slashes UK Milk Prices

Fears that a round of milk price cuts would follow Dairy Crest's 1.25ppl cut came true this week. The wave of price cuts was condemned by National Farmers Union dairy board chairman Gwyn Jones. "No sooner has Dairy UK started talking about the 'green shoots' of recovery in the dairy industry than its members come along and trample them underfoot", he said.

Over in America the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed a delay in the implementation of the BSE final rule, which prohibits the use of high-risk cattle material in feed for all animal species. The National Cattlemenâ€™s Beef Association (NCBA) were quick to criticise. They said that the decision would solicit public comments solely on delaying the implementation of a new feed ban, rather than soliciting public comment on the ban itself.

Meanwhile in Canada it has come to light that a Canadian task force recently published a report saying that a 'loophole' allowing untested livestock antibiotics into the country should be left open until further studies are finished. The report, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, also acknowledged issues of food safety and antibiotic resistance that could threaten the public. The competitiveness of the industry was deemed of greater importance.
