US beef exports to Central America surge in value - USMEF
Costa Rica leads growth as US beef sees record-high returns in the regionUS beef exports to Central America reached record levels in 2024, with soaring shipment values highlighting strong regional demand despite a slight dip in overall volume, according to data released by USDA and compiled by the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF).
According to recent trade data, the United States exported 1,931 metric tonnes of beef to Central America in January, a modest 1% decline compared to the previous year. However, the value of those exports jumped 24%, reaching $15.7 million—a clear sign of rising market prices and robust consumer interest.
Costa Rica led the surge, with shipments climbing 92% year-on-year to 556 metric tonnes. The value of US beef exports to the country more than doubled, rising 125% to $4.5 million.
Honduras also recorded impressive gains, while Guatemala—traditionally the region’s top market—saw export volumes dip 5% from last year’s strong performance. Still, Guatemala imported 850 metric tonnes of US beef, with the value of those shipments increasing 13% to $7.35 million.
The figures underscore the resilience and growing value of US beef exports in key Latin American markets, driven by demand for high-quality protein and favourable trade conditions.
