Indonesia, Brazil companies to start dairy, meat business
The business was started in IndonesiaIndonesia's Asiabeef Biofarma and Brazil's Agropecuaria 31 have signed an initial agreement for the development of a dairy and meat business in Indonesia, Reuters reported, citing the Indonesian agriculture ministry on Friday.
The agreement includes an import of 100,000 heads of tropical dairy cattle from Brazil, estimated to be worth around $292 million.
"The presence of an investor from Brazil can help support our efforts to become self-sufficient in meat and milk," Indonesia's Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman said in a statement.
Indonesia's president-elect Prabowo Subianto has pledged to provide free meals to over 80 million school children, which is poised to lift dairy imports and ultimately boost the country's underdeveloped milk industry.
The programme will require 4.1 million tons of milk, of which only 16% is met with domestic fresh milk supply.
The agriculture deputy minister Sudaryono, who goes by one name, said earlier there are up to 40 companies committed to import 1.3 million of live cattle for the incoming government's free meal programme, according to media reports.
