Japan ruling opens door to US beef exports

31 March 2005

JAPAN - A Japanese food safety panel has said that relaxing domestic cattle testing standards for BSE won't put consumers at risk, raising the possibility of Japan reopening its borders to US beef. The announcement that slaughtered cattle 20 months or younger need not be screened for mad cow disease means that the country has taken a significant step forward to lifting the import ban on US beef.
