Russian scientists receive grant to improve cattle selection, breeding programs

The team at the Laboratory of Genetics and DNA Technologies at Kostroma Agricultural Academy will receive 600,000 rubles (US$7,875.00) in grant funds as state support for young Russian scientists.

The research will result in new ways of conducting cattle selection and breeding work at the enterprises of the Kostroma region based on genetic markers of cattle productivity.

Young professionals during 2022-2023 will carry out scientific research on the topic: "The complex effect of polymorphism of somatotropin and thyroglobulin genes on the milk productivity of cattle in the Kostroma region."

Breeding work is carried out in cooperation with the breeding farms of the region and is aimed at improving the quality of selection of the best animals for further breeding.

“Our team has a serious and difficult job ahead which will allow us to preserve and improve the most significant domestic breeds, such as the Kostroma,” said Ksenia Sabetova, the head of laboratory of genetics and DNA technologies. "Improving breeding programs will have a positive effect on the quality of products obtained from animals in our region, which will significantly increase the competitiveness of products of the Kostroma brand and will provide the population with high-quality products of their own production."
