Trouw Nutrition webinar considers “Bioavailability and Beyond” when feeding trace minerals
Trouw Nutrition, Nutreco’s animal nutrition division, continues its Global Nutritional Solutions webinar series with a look at trace minerals and bio-availability. The free, one-hour Bioavailability and Beyond webinar will be held on Wednesday, 24 March, at 9:00 CET and 16:00 CET.Registration is available here.
Supplementing livestock diets with trace mineral mixes is common practice as basal ingredients may not always meet animals’ nutritional requirements for trace minerals. However, assuring the bioavailability of the mineral in the animal presents a challenge.
Trace metal absorption is very dynamic and depends on many factors including animal related (mineral status and homeostatic control) and dietary related (source and antagonists) factors. Absorption of trace minerals also differs greatly between ruminant and non-ruminant animals.
Several research studies have demonstrated that hydroxy trace minerals’ higher stability along with lower solubility and less reactivity can facilitate a significant increase in trace metal absorption. These properties help the mineral to move through the intestinal wall and into the blood system where it becomes available to the animal to support animal productivity and health.
During the webinar, Jeanne Boekhorst MSc, Regional Ruminant Manager, and Davi Brito DVM MSc, Global Trace Mineral Programme Manager, will guide participants through relevant factors that influence trace mineral absorption and how different sources can affect ruminant health and performance response.
