Ministry Unveils Plan to Boost Cattle Numbers

MYANMAR - The Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department is cooperating with the private sector on a five-year plan for natural breeding, asexual breeding, development of animal feed and pasture, and control of infectious diseases to increase the nation’s cattle herds, said U Hla Kyaw, deputy minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation.

Some 1.4 million cows, which are usually impregnated when they come of age, have been impregnated to boost cattle numbers.

Twenty-eight zones for breeding and production of draught cattle, dairy and beef cattle have been established throughout Myanmar, U Hla Kyaw said.

The ministry spent K232 million for breed improvement from fiscal 2015 to 2017, and K140 million will be spent in fiscal 2018.
