According to Prensa Latina, the UN-specialized agency stressed that the absence of rain has caused the death of up to 60 per cent of the herds in some areas of this nation of the African Horn.
In its report, entitled World Information and Warning System, dedicated to Somalia, pastoral homes face extreme food insecurity.
The FAO has pointed out that more than a year of severe dry weather affected the availability of fodder and water in most of the pastureland.
The situation tends to aggravate in front of meteorological forecasts, indicating precipitation below average during April to June.
For this reason, recovery of the pastures and betterment of the conditions for animals seems highly improbable.
The livestock sector represents 40 per cent of the gross domestic product of the nation and 65 per cent of the population is dedicated to livestock.
