Taiwan Lifts Import Ban on Japanese Beef

TAIWAN - Taiwan’s food safety authority has lifted its 16-year-old import ban on Japanese beef.

The Japan News reports that the ban was canceled on Monday with conditions, such as only allowing imports on beef from cows aged 30 months or younger.

Taiwan banned beef imports from Japan following the outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad cow disease, in the country in September 2001.

The restriction was removed amid high popularity of Japanese beef, particularly wagyu.

Since the ban was slapped on the product, there have been many attempts to smuggle wagyu from Japan, people familiar with the matter said.

According to Japanese government data, around 20 tons of beef were exported to Taiwan each year in the late 1990s.

Imports cover some 90 per cent of beef demand in Taiwan.
