The facility, based at Nordhackstedt, will process whey produced from cheese processed by Germany’s largest dairy DMK, supplying whey protein concentrate and lactose to Arla Foods.

Construction began in 2012, one year after the joint venture between the two dairy giants – ArNoCo – was established. Test processing runs began late last year and production commenced officially in February.

ArNoCo emplys 40 staff, processing 700,000 tons of sweet (unfermented) whey into 12,000 tons of whey protein and 25,000 tons of lactose annually.

Spokesperson for the executive board of the DMK group, Dr Josef Schwaiger, said: “The international ingredients business is one of our strategic growth areas.

He added that the facility is in an ‘ideal location’ for processing the whey obtained from the neighbouring DMK factory.

Arla’s CEO, Peter Tuborgh, said: “The market for these products is growing fast, so we are pleased to get started on this new production.”
