A new milk drying tower, creamery and greater milk preparation and processing capacity adds to one of Europe’s largest dairy processing plants, increasing the 1.4 billion kilos a year site to 1.84 million kilos.

Production of an additional 40,000 tonnes of butter, much of it for German Arla branded products and sale in central Europe, and 42,000 tonnes of milk powder annually has started at what is now Alra's biggest facility.

However, Arla have been clear that growth in powdered production will also fuel emerging markets in Africa and Asia.

Great emphasis has been put on the sustainability of the site, focussing on energy efficiency.

Around 75 jobs have been created by the announcement for the Eifel district, near the Luxembourg and Belgian border.

Arla Foods CEO, Peter Tuborgh said the development makes him “very proud” and show farmers are looking ahead at the future.

“To my mind, this ultramodern dairy production facility is first and foremost a testament to forward-thinking farmers who have ventured to take a bold step forward.”
