Cadiz Bluetongue Confirmed as Serotype One
SPAIN – The Spanish government has officially confirmed an outbreak of Bluetongue virus for the southern region of Cadiz as serotype one.A sentinel goat tested positive in the Tarifa region, the government announced on Friday.
Surveillance and disease control in the area was strengthened after the strain was identified as being the same as Morocco to the south and Italy to the east.
The most likely source of the outbreak is Morroco, according to government scientists.
The announcement follows a spate of media reports of outbreaks in southern Spain, centring on Tangier and Larache.
Commenting on the measures, a government spokesperson said: "All mainland Spain is considered a restricted zone for serotype 1, there will be no change in that area of restriction.
"However, to protect areas not currently affected by this serotype a containment area has been established with movement restrictions."
