Iran Lifts Brazil Beef Ban
BRAZIL - Beef from Mato Grosso state can now be shipped into Iran, ending a three month embargo because of an atypical case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).A decision was reached on Sunday afternoon between Iranian agriculture minister Mahmoud Hojjati and Brazilian livestock minister Neri Geller.
The embargo was placed in May after a mature cow tested positive for the atypical BSE case.
Mr Geller welcomed the announcement, praising the veterinary officials for addressing the isolated case.
He said: "I am very happy with this new achievement, since the state of Mato Grosso has all the capacity to export beef not only for Iran but also for other countries.
"The quick work of the veterinary service of Brazil, showed that the animal was identified isolated case and did not represent any risk to animal and public health.”
