Figures from the National Institute of Milk (Inale) showed that around 245,000 tons were bringing in $870 million.

This is $90 million more than in 2012, reports El Observador.

Inale President Ricardo de Izaguirre said that Venezuela and Brazil remained the largest markets, accounting for 53 per cent of dairy export value.

Brazil represents around a quarter while Venezuela buys one third of dairy products, he added.

Following in order were, China at around 11 per cent and Russia at 9 per cent.

Mr de Izaguirre said earnings were buoyed by significant price increases for skimmed and whole milk powder on the global market.

Powders were around 30 per cent more expensive, while Cheese remained stable at $2,620 per tonne.
