Annual Scholarship Programme Opens
NEW ZEALAND - Beef and Lamb New Zealand is inviting young New Zealanders interested in agriculture to apply for its annual undergraduate scholarship round.Applicants do not have to be off a farm, but they do need to be talented, motivated and passionate about the sheep and beef industry. The aim of the scholarships is to nurture young people into the sheep and beef sector – both on farm and into wider industry roles.
B+LNZ Chief Executive Dr Scott Champion says the programme has been around for 10 years now and, every year, the organisation is delighted at the breadth of backgrounds and the high calibre of applicants.
“Our ‘oldest’ scholars have now been in their careers for about a decade. The scholarships are an important part of B+LNZ’s work – and an investment which provides a return for many, many years as the former scholars build their careers in the industry.
“Obviously, the students benefit through the financial support they receive during a financially-lean period of their lives, but it’s the industry which ultimately benefits.”
Over the years, B+LNZ has supported more than 40 young people through Lincoln and Massey Universities, and Taratahi and Telford.
Successful applicants have their tuition fees paid for the duration of their programme – up to $5,000 per year for four years, dependent on achieving a B+ average. B+LNZ also provides annual opportunities for scholars to get together and meet industry leaders and agricultural experts, exposing them to fresh ideas and allowing them to explore a wide range of career pathways.
