Steer prices followed, averaging R$3.56/kg liveweight. This equates to an increase of 11 per cent year on year and six per cent on August, according to market analysts at Meat and Livestock Australia.

Prices are also up in the retail sector where, despite demand slackening, beef has risen 10 per cent on the previous month and 3 per cent year on year.

An MLA analyst commented: “The decrease in the number of cattle on feed this year due to higher costs with lean cattle and calves was the major reason for the decreased on cattle supply keeping prices up.”
