New States Recognised as Free of FMD

BRAZIL - The states of Ceará and Piauí are now recognised as zones free of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).

This announcement will benefit 340,000 cattle farmers and 170,000 properties in Ceará. In Piauí, 62,000 properties and 72,000 cattle farmers will benefit.

The federal government has invested £2 million in the veterinary service of Ceará and Piauí.

Besides Piauí and Ceará, the states of Maranhão, northern Pará, Pernambuco, Paraíba, Alagoas and Rio Grande do Norte, are also free of the disease with vaccination.

Approximately 22.6 million head of cattle, were nationally recognized.
