Government Announces Daily Milk Purchase of 40,000 Litres
COLOMBIA – The government is going to buy 40,000 litres of milk per day from Colombian farmers for the next fifteen months to balance markets.Milk prices have been causing some stir across the country for some time and the state purchasing of milk is designed to alleviate market pressures, levelling prices.
Accompanying the announcement was a funding boost of 60 billion pesos, to go into developing the dairy sector, according to reports in Elespectador.
Pledged funding is part of a wider Presidential policy to rebuild Colombian agriculture which is in a ‘structural crisis’, President Juan Manuel Santos told Elespectador.
“A crisis that has diverse origins and did not emerge from the overnight. This is the accumulation of a number of phenomena that have lived or have omitted during decades which we are now exploring," he said.
"We have to turn the crisis into an opportunity because we have great potential as a country to create equity and prosperity.”
