Schmallenberg Vaccine Granted Market Authorization
FRANCE - Market authorization has been granted for a new inactivated vaccine for the schmallenberg virus, to be available to French farmers in September.

Product testing has shown 100 per cent prevention of viremia in sheep and calves.
The product, produced by Merial, is indicated for active immunization and is necessary for the industry as now cure currently exists for the vector borne illness.
“When SBV arrived, we did everything we could to offer to our customers a high quality vaccine in a record time,” said Dr. Silke Birlenbach, head of Veterinary Public Health at Merial.
“The first priority for us was to have a solution to protect herds, now we are looking forward to partnering with veterinarians, and the livestock and research community to enhance our understanding of this novel disease,” added Dr Birlenbach.
Merial has said that vaccine doses will be available before September.
The vaccine is also under review in the UK by VMD. The official indication and availability of doses will be communicated when the provisional license is granted.
