Indian Buffalo Meat Exports to Expand
INDIA - As a result of sustained increases in the production of buffalo meat, export capacity growth and competitive export prices, India is on track to become the world’s largest bovine meat exporter in 2013-14 (Business Monitor International, utilising USDA data), reports MLA.

Bovine production in India is estimated to have grown 9.8 per cent in 2012-13, and is forecast to expanding a further four per sent in 2013-14, to 4 million tonnes cwe - with strong demand for dairy products driving herd expansion.
In addition, the approval of laws in late 2010 for Salvaging and Rearing Male Buffalo Calves (SRMBC), and the Utilization of Fallen Animals scheme (UFA) created new incentives to slaughter previously underutilised buffalos.
The SRMBC and UFA scheme promote the rearing of buffalo bull calves for meat production and assist in achieving the targeted growth rate of 10 per cent for the meat sector.
While Indian buffalo has some distinct advantages, the lack of Foot and Mouth Disease-free status constrains it from entering the higher valued markets, like the EU, Japan and Korea.
