Success In Milk Sector: Prices and Deliveries Up in March
SPAIN – Farmgate prices and deliveries increased in March showing some recovery in the milk sector, according to FEGA, the Spanish Agricultural Guarantee Fund.In March, Spain’s dairy farmers received 0.3 per cent more for their milk on average at a price of $0.338 litre than in February. Deliveries increased 11.53 per cent over the same time period.
García Tejerina, Ministry of Agriculture Food and Environment commented that the desired effects of the national dairy programme, "Collaboration Agreement to improve the efficiency of value chains and marketing of milk and milk products" are coming to fruition.
"The main efforts have focused on bringing transparency to the sector, both in terms of prices in relation to milk exchanges between operators,” said Mr Tejerina.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture has confirmed that improvements have been made in milk retail. Bulk purchase price from dairies is €0.50-0.59/litre.
Skimmed milk in discount stores is maintaining its rise although semi-skimmed ‘loss-leader’ products have become cheaper.
A new quality standard for yoghurt has also been placed in review procedure before the Ministry by Mr Tejerina.
"If brought in, the changes will adapt the rules on yogurt to the new realities of the market,” he said.
“It will eliminate restrictions that may put Spanish producers at a disadvantage and ensure a fair and dynamic market in order to ensure fair competition between industries and improve the competitiveness of the sector."
