LMC: GB Tops Deadweight Figures Again
EU - Luxembourg and the Czech Republic are adrift at the bottom of the cattle price table as of May 19 at €268/kg and €288/kg respectively, with Great Britain, France and Sweden and Greece having values of €440/kg or above.With an equivalent R3 heifer price of 469.4c/kg in the week ending the 19 May GB has remained at the top of the EU Deadweight Cattle Prices League Table. The league table ranks 17 EU countries in terms of the farmgate price paid for R3 grade heifers and provides a useful comparison on an EU wide basis.
The GB R3 heifer price increased by 12.7c/kg from 456.7c/kg in the week ending the 21 April. This was the largest increase in price recorded for all the EU countries tabulated. An increase of 11.4c/kg to 458.3c/kg in the week ending the 19 May has moved Ireland up one position on the league table into second position. Northern Ireland has also moved up one position into fourth place with an equivalent R3 heifer price of 453.2c/kg.
The biggest movement on the table has been in Greece where the R3 heifer price came back 9.7c/kg to 440c/kg in the week ending 19 May, moving it down four places into sixth position.
R3 heifer prices have also come back between the two comparison weeks tabulated in the range of 10-15c/kg in Germany,Slovenia and Poland.
Despite the marked price declines in these countries the EU average increased by 3.3c/kg to 421.2c/kg. The value of euro fell slightly against sterling from €1=£0.856 in the week ending the 21 April to €1= £0.846 in the week ending the 19 May.
