This figure is for a typical cattle farm with smallholdings paying in the range of $20-48. Sheep and goats can be tagged for a cost of around $22.

Farmers worried about registration costs can take advantage of financial support. Ministry of Agriculture grants range from 250 to 1,000 US dollars.

Recent instances of slaughtering animals with no recorded medical history have got the wheels turning for livestock data policy changes. Registration is believed to offer consumer and industry security around the issue of food quality to avoid repeats of meat quality mix-ups.

Government legislation will enforce mandatory cattle registration and soon Ukraine’s livestock will soon all be registered be registered, said President Vladimir Horzheyev.

"There has recently been too many cases of substandard products from diseased animals entering the market without veterinary inspection. Veterinary and sanitary expertise can identify issues with beef quality, however, we remain at risk if our markets remain untouched and continue to sell unchecked beef.”

Last year, over half a million young cattle were registered through state funding. So this year over 64 million grivna has been paid out in aid to support registration.
