The Mordavian herd has increased to 9.8 million with beef breeding stock figures growing from 270,000 to 2.62 million.

Current government policy is helping the progression of developing pedigree and cross-bred beef animals across Mordovia, a region which has all of the prerequisites for beef production.

This is according to Vladimir Sidorov, Deputy Prime Minister, who said the extensive network of veterinary and breeding services, expanses of unused arable land and pasture land for grazing make Mordovia ideal for expanding Russia’s beef production.

State goals are to improve rural employment and meet supply and demand dynamics challenges with the beef market.

Since 2009, two 5000 head feedlots have been developed, financed by the Republic of Mordovia.

The government has said expansion has been possible through investing in cross-breeding schemes, the development of pedigree beef animals and the integration of the dairy sector with Russian beef cattle.

By importing Hereford, Limousine and Angus pedigree stock, the national genetics have improved and by culling unproductive dairy heifers, more resources have been made available for cattle fattening.
