The scheme is funded by a collective of American organisations and businesses that aims to improve the management and insemination of 1,200 dairy cattle.

Entitled the Rwanda Dairy Competitiveness Programme II (RDCP), the ambitious project aims to train farmers, 50 per cent who will be female, in herd nutrition and health.

Household poverty and nutrition are issues hoped to be improved in over 35,000 homes through the project with 7,500 jobs also to be created.

Policy Chief, Frank O’Brien said he was confident of the great impact the scheme could have.
“This partnership will expand and strengthen ERAGIC’s business services, and create an ideal opportunity to improve the quantity and quality of milk coming from these four districts,” said Mr O’Brien. “This initiative will empower farmers to improve the quality of their yields sustainably and increase their incomes for more financial security.”

The scheme is to be partly funded by $69,000 from milk cooperative giant, Land O’Lakes in addition to $15 million from the United States Agency for International Development
