Arla Closes Swedish Cheese Plant

25 March 2013

SWEDEN - Danish-Swedish multi-national dairy company, Arla Foods, has closed its factory in Falkenberg, Sweden making 130 employees redundant.

The closure is because of a centralisation of cheese production, which will be moved to Denmark.

Arla announced the restructuring in April 2011.

The company said the reason for the closure is hard competition and a need for more effective production, according to the management.

Arla Foods is a global dairy company and a co-operative owned by dairy farmers.

The company has production facilities in 12 countries and sales offices in a further 30, with a total of more than 18,000 employees. Arla Foods was formed as the result of a merger between the Swedish dairy cooperative Arla and the Danish dairy company MD Foods on 17 April 2000. It is based in Århus.
