MLA: Daily Cattle Market Summary

AUSTRALIA - Numbers were mixed on Wednesday as the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator finished on 311¢/kg cwt with trade steers down a cent, feeder steers up a cent and medium cows unchanged on 123¢/kg, report market experts at Meat and Livestock Australia.

Casino

Throughput at Casino was steady with over half the yarding consisting of young cattle. Medium C2 vealer steers topped at 190¢, to average 182¢, while the heifer portion generally sold 3¢ higher on average, making 182¢/kg.

Light yearling D muscle steers to restock sold from 140¢ to 150¢, to average around 146¢/kg, while heifers were too few to quote.

Grown steers and heifers were scarce, with medium weight D3 cows averaging 128¢, back 4¢/kg. Heavy D3 lines topped at 145¢ to average 142¢/kg.

Warrambool

Consignments at Warrnambool eased slightly with some of the usual export and restocker buyers absent. Heavy vealer B3 steers topped at 178¢, averaging 173¢, while heavy C3 heifer lines generally sold from 142¢ to 168¢/kg.

The majority of the heavy yearling steers sold cheaper on last week making 151¢, while the equivalent heifer portion averaged 146¢/kg. Heavy C4 steers topped at 160¢ to average 150¢, while heavy C4 cows made from 120¢ to 126¢/kg. Heavy D2 dairy cows averaged 3¢ cheaper on 95¢/kg.

Dalby

Numbers at Dalby lifted by 71 per cent with quality mixed across all grades. Light yearling steers to restocker orders lifted 4¢ on average making 180¢, while the plainer lines finished on 167¢/kg.

Light D2 heifers to process topped at 168¢ to be 3¢ dearer, while restockers generally paid from 138¢ to 168¢/kg. The majority of the C4 bullocks slipped 5¢ on average making 176¢, while processor paid 142¢ on average for plain grown heifers.

Medium weight cows returning to the paddock lifted 5¢ averaging 122¢, while heavy well-conditioned cows to slaughter were unchanged on last week averaging 145¢/kg.

Market Conclusion

At the conclusion of Wednesday’s markets the Eastern Young Cattle indicator (EYCI) was relatively steady on 311.50¢/kg cwt. Trade steers slipped 1¢ on 170¢, while feeder steers were up 1¢ making 168¢/kg. Medium and heavy weight steers both finished on 164¢/kg, while medium cows were unchanged on 123¢/kg.
